In the end …

“In the end, we all know what we’ve done.”

This quote is from the 1990 movie, Flatliners.  It stuck is one of those lines that stays with you and returns at certain crucial life moments, mostly because it’s true.

Life is full of those people that do less than ethical things then hide behind the fact that no one saw them do it, or that they didn’t get caught.  Is that what matters?  Or is it he fact that they did indeed act unethically?

Every day we see people who give generously during the holidays, covering up their selfish actions during the rest of the year.  Is giving charitably what matters?  Or is it the fact that people act selfishly most of the year?  Is it how people see us publicly?  Or is it how we are, privately?

I’ve come across a lot of wise words in my lifetime.  I’ve let these words be my guides in everyday life.  It doesn’t matter what you do or what people think you have done.  In the end very little matters.  In the end, we all have to be able to sleep at night; sleep with the knowledge of how we’ve lived our life, not in just that one day, but in its entirety.

In the end, we all know what we’ve done.
