Holiday Lights

We were driving around the other night and noticed all the houses lit up for the holidays. Most had elaborate lights with decorations in their front lawns and some had piped in music. There were ooohs and ahhhs all around. A while later, after we were done looking at the lights and headed for the freeway to come home, we came across a poor neighborhood. In that neighborhood, many of the houses had no decorations. The ones that did had only simple, old-fashioned large colored bulbs in one window of their house. The kids thought it was tacky and laughed. I thought about it and knew it wasn’t tacky. These are the kinds of houses that are decorated not to please anyone; not to keep up with the neighbor down the street; but to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, not the commercialized one.
