The world lies in the way we see things, not in the way they actually are.
This morning, as I sat in bed typing on my laptop, I noticed a tree outside my window. I see this tree every day. This morning I noticed that it is turning a beautiful red color. I had never seen it like this. This is not my first autumn here and yet I had never seen it. Of course, one might say the reason is that my bed was in a different position than it was previously so I didn’t get the same angle. Or one could say that the change in the tree’s color is a result of our changing world climate.
I think, aside from anything else it might be, I am looking at things differently right now. My world is changing and I’m seeing things I haven’t seen before. I’m seeing the same things I always see in a different light, a different angle.
The world lies in the way we see it, not in the way it actually is.
This reminds me of a time I was trying to explain the difference between an abstract collection of things and a concrete real thing to a woman who just wasn’t getting a thing I said.
No. You clearly get it. It is the combination of what you just said and the particular example that did it.
I was talking about trees in general and tried to differentiate that from a particular tree. I pointed to a tree and explained how that thing there was not the same as the word ‘tree.’ She stared at my hand. I don’t think she understood that my hand was pointing.
It wasn’t that she couldn’t see the forest for the trees. She couldn’t even see a single tree.
It was a truly bizarre experience.
Change can be so difficult. I hope you’re taking time to enjoy your new perspective and learn from it.
It’s always good to look at the world from another vantage point. You see far more.
It’s always amazing to look at something and say, “was that THERE before? I don’t remember seeing that…” May things continue to open up for you.
Sometimes a different perspective is all you need. You sound like you’re in a good place!
Pandemonic, at the very least, it means my eyes are open wider. That can’t be a bad thing.
I’ve been having similar experiences — it’s amazing, isn’t it?
I saw “scoutmocking” on your comment at my blog, and at first I thought you were one of my Girl Scout friends — but now I know you!
I like this music on the song spot thingy! And it isn’t deafening, either!
